The journey

Masoma was born in Afghanistan, but she and her family fled to Pakistan when she was a few months old. After US forces arrived in Afghanistan in 2001, the family returned and remained there for many years. “Those were some of the best days of my life,” Masoma recalls. “Going to school, spending time with friends, and not worrying too much about the future.” In 2013, the family again decided to leave in search of safety and a stable future. This time, they fled to Indonesia, expecting to stay for a short time before being permanently resettled in a third country. Their “short stay” lasted almost nine years. Masoma was shocked to learn that as a refugee, she was not allowed to work or access several basic rights in Indonesia. Despite these hardships, Masoma was determined to contribute in the best way she could and started volunteering as a teacher at refugee learning centres. “Teaching and working with other refugees helped me grow stronger and become the person I am today,” she says.

Arriving in Australia

After almost a decade in limbo, Masoma and her family were resettled in Australia in 2022. Life in the beginning of that chapter was overwhelming. Masoma’s expectations were different from her reality, and starting again from zero was challenging. Still, she sought a path that would allow her to contribute to her new community. “Australia had become my safe place and my home, and I was beyond grateful to be here after everything we endured.”

Giving back

Her years in Indonesia had equipped Masoma with experience in teaching and supporting children, a vocation she had grown passionate about. She embarked on a course of study that would lead her to a Bachelor of Education. She’s since completed her Certificate III and Diploma in Early Childhood Education and Care and gained relevant work experience in Australia. “Working with children has been the most rewarding and fulfilling part of my journey,” she says. Masoma is eager to further her studies, so she can further support children in their development and growth and help them build a brighter future.
