The journey

Fayhaa, or Fay, was born in Iraq, where her childhood was shaped by conflict, discrimination and displacement. Growing up amid instability, she witnessed the sacrifices her family made to stay safe and learned early how fragile ‘home’ can be. A talented musician, she challenged cultural stigma around women artists, using music as a tool for healing and empowerment.

Arriving in Australia

In 2001, Fay survived seven days lost at sea before reaching Australia, where she was detained for over a year. Resilience was required to rebuild her life: learning English, navigating new systems and rediscovering her identity. Education became her anchor, restoring her confidence and opening up new opportunities.

Giving back

Fay went on to complete a Bachelor of Social Work and has since contributed across advocacy, music therapy, community development, capacity building and community education. She is known for combining lived experience with professional expertise to strengthen belonging, independence and wellbeing in diverse communities. Through volunteering, community development, mentoring and advocacy work, Fay highlights the strengths and contributions of refugees. Her greatest pride is raising her children in Australia and watching them thrive, proof, she says, that hardship does not define destiny. She shares her story to foster empathy, challenge stereotypes and celebrate the courage and creativity refugees bring to Australia.

Become an ambassador

Refugee Stories for Change is our flagship community engagement program that connects trained refugee speakers with people around Australia.

We refer to our speakers as Refugee Ambassadors of Australia because of the experience they bring to this program and the breadth of their engagement as speakers, leaders within their communities, media commentators and professionals.

Through powerful storytelling in schools, businesses, communities, and government agencies, our Refugee Ambassadors are reshaping the national dialogue on refugees, one impactful story at a time.
